This group meets in the afternoon of the second Wednesday in the month at various places out and about usually in the local area.

The group aim is to visit places of historical interest within a 40 mile radius; members use their own cars and self-fund each trip. We also arrange talks given by local people with great knowledge of the area and its history.

The longer trips include a lunch stop and a welcome tea and cake shop is always found for shorter trips.

  • Jan 14 - Speaker (Paul Scott) Subject Joseph Banks, venue Grantham Library (2pm start). The son of William Banks, a wealthy Lincolnshire country squire and member of the House of Commons, Sir Joseph made his name on the 1766 natural-history expedition to Newfoundland and Labrador and also took part in Capt Cook's first great voyage from 1768-1771 returning to immediate great fame. He held the position of president of the Royal Society for over 41 years and advised King George III on the Royal Botanic Gardens, sending botanists around the world to collect plants and making Kew the world's leading botanical garden.

  • Mar 11 - Speaker (Colin Deeley} Subject Southwell Workhouse & Infirmary, venue Grantham Museum
  • Apr 8 - Visit to Southwell Workhouse and Infirmary
  • May 13 - Visit to Polish War Graves Cemetery, Newark (tbc)
  • Jun 10 - Guided Tour of Grantham House, Castlegate
  • Jul 10 - Visit to the We'll Meet Again Museum., Boston
  • Aug 12 - Visit to Doddington Hall & Sculpture Park (inc military uniforms)
  • Sep 11 - Visit to Woolsthorpe Manor (birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton)
  • Oct 14 - Talk/Quiz on St Wulframs's Church (Carolyn Brocklebank). venue Grantham House with visit to St Wulfram's afterwards
  • Nov 11 - Planning Meeting for 2027
  • Dec 10 - No meeting

Please note that the July and September meetings have been changed to Fridays.

November 2025 meeting

On Wednesday 12th November Grantham u3a local history group visited the partly refurbished Grantham Museum for a social get-together along with a look at the new exhibitions and a talk regarding the recent refurbishments and future plans. There is still work to be done and the new exhibit, a Compton Organ, is still to be fully installed but the amount of work done by volunteers is impressive.
